The Saxophone Summit
Featuring
Lee Taylor – Alex Murzyn – Glenn Kostur

It has been a long tradition in jazz to feature saxophone players in various settings, be it as a solo instrument, in saxophone battles / cutting contests, or as a saxophone section of various sizes as seen in a Big BandSome of the most notable examples are Supersax, circa 1970’s, playing Charlie Parker solos in unison and the famous Four Brothers saxophone section of Woody Herman’s 2nd great herd beginning back in 1947’s, featuring: Herbie Steward, Zoot Sims, Serge Chaloff and Stan Getz.

The New Mexico Saxophone Summit is an extension of that same idea, this time showcasing three of the finest New Mexico has to offer, highlighting arrangements of jazz standards, and original compositions from members of the band. Of course we could not attempt to do a project like this without paying homage to the great saxophone player / composer Jimmy Guiffre, who wrote the original tune that started it all for the Woody Herman band titled: “Four Brothers”.

SFMC is proud to present a special concert highlighting “The Three Brothers”, all of whom exemplify exactly what Jimmy Guiffre had in mind when he wrote his landmark composition.

Lee Taylor: An active member of the Albuquerque music scene, Lee has performed with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Louis Bellson, John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet, Joe Lovano, Kevin Mahogany, The New York Voices, Lew Tabackin, Clark Terry, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of Larry O’Brien.

Alex Murzyn: One of the most versatile and in demand saxophone players on the New Mexico music scene since his arrival from San Francisco a few years ago, Alex has played with Ray Obiedo, Pete Escovedo, and Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra.

Glenn Kostur: A longtime fixture on the New Mexico music scene, Glenn Kostur has “Done it All”. A founding member of the world famous saxophone quartet Thrasher, Glenn is also the current director of The Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra. His early Career includes three years as saxophonist, composer/arranger and music director for Jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. In addition to Maynard’s band, Glenn has played with the orchestras of Louie Bellson, Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie and Billy Eckstine.

The Saxophone Summit will be accompanied by Bob Fox – Piano, Gordon Johnson – Bass, and John Trentacosta – Drums.

Listen to “Four Brothers” (1947)
Woody Herman with Zoot Sims, Serge Chaloff, Herbie Steward and Stan Getz.
