When John Trentacosta arrived in New Mexico more than thirty years ago, word on the street was that there was a great Afro Cuban quartet called YOBOSO, led by pianist Bert Dalton. They had a steady weeknight gig at the La Fonda Hotel in addition to festivals and clubs all over the southwest region. John would go hear them often and was constantly blown away by the musicianship of these musicians. Over almost two decades they released two excellent albums, both of which were met with critical acclaim.
Fast forward to 2011 and Bert Dalton hits it out of the park again with his Brazil Project …….
The Brazil Project is an exciting Brazilian jazz ensemble consisting of pianist Bert Dalton, vocalist Patty Stephens, bassist Rob “Milo” Jaramillo, percussionist Frank Leto, and drummer John Bartlit. Their music is a blend of traditional, contemporary, and original Brazilian jazz. Their premier self-titled recording won the World Music category in the New Mexico Music Awards. Samba and bossa nova rhythms, the excitement of carnival, sensuous songs in Portuguese and English, fiery percussion, and top-flight jazz and Latin improvisations make the Brazil Project one of the most exciting Latin bands in the Southwest. The Brazil Project has released two recordings – The Brazil Project and Café Colombo.
On Saturday, March 7th, SFMC will be presenting The Brazil Project at UNIT B. Come on out for an evening of some of the best Brazilian Jazz anywhere, performed by five of the best New Mexico has to offer.
