Louis Hayes – NEA Jazz Master
Jazz Master Louis Hayes hails from Detroit Michigan, one of the most fertile musical cities that has brought us many jazz giants including Yusef Lateef, Kenny Burrell, Doug Watkins and many more. At 18 years of age he was in New York playing with the great Horace Silver Quintet recording the classic album “Six Pieces of Silver”, which introduced him to the jazz world as a new force to be acknowledged. His reputation took off with Horace from 1956 -1959 when he joined Cannonball Adderley where he and bassist Sam Jones, with their hard driving style of Bebop propelled the quintet to joyous musical heights and timeless recordings through 1965, taking their place in jazz history as the “Dynamic Duo” of jazz. In 1965 he joined Oscar Peterson for two years, returning again in 1971.
For the next few decades Louis became leader / co-leader of a series of groups which included Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Barron, Junior Cook, Woody Shaw and Dexter Gordon, in addition to several years with McCoy Tyner.
In 2002, he formed and led The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band, producing 3 successful albums including musicians Vincent Herring, Jeremy Pelt and bassists Vincent Archer and Dezron Douglas. In 2017 he produced “Serenade for Horace “, a BlueNote records album honoring his mentor Horace Silver. He currently leads his own quintet featuring Abraham Burton and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. Their latest album features a playlist of Hard Bop classics that are reminiscent of the jazz heydays of which Louis Hayes has his own star along “The Jazz Walk of Fame”.
Over the course of his amazing career, Louis Hayes has played and recorded with John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, J.J. Johnson, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Wes Montgomery, Joe Henderson, Cedar Walton and George Benson. He has received numerous honors including the highest honor given to any jazz musician; The NEA Jazz Master Award.
Still firing it up like he has for decades, SFMC would like to honor Louis Hayes on his 89th birthday coming up on May 31st, a birthday which he shares with his very close friend Tootie Heath. Calling all drummers !!!! This Concert will sell out very quickly, so we advise that you get your tickets early.
The Louis Hayes Quintet will also be appearing at The Outpost in Albuquerque on Thursday, May 14th – www.outpostspace.org and Friday, May 15th in Taos for the Taos Jazz Society, www.taosjazz.org
